An Unwanted Puppy

An Unwanted Puppy
A burden assigned
Todd resents Manchee, a birthday gift he never asked for, and complains about feeding, training, and walking him. Manchee’s talkative simplicity initially seems like another irritation in an already noisy life.
Dependence grows quietly
Despite the complaints, Todd keeps watch over the dog and brings him along. Their shared routine begins before Todd understands how much he will rely on it.
A Dog’s Warning

A Dog’s Warning
Instinct before explanation
Manchee growls at the silent presence and alerts Todd to listen. His ordinary animal behavior becomes crucial in a world where every expected source of Noise has failed.
Companionship in danger
Manchee cannot explain the void, but he helps Todd follow it. His loyalty is practical and immediate, unlike the complex motives Todd struggles to interpret in adults.
The First Rescue

The First Rescue
A dog intervenes
When Aaron strangles Todd, Manchee bites his attacker’s leg and interrupts the assault. The dog’s action gives Todd a chance to survive.
Trust made visible
Todd calls Manchee a good dog, a change from his usual scolding. Their bond begins to move from reluctant ownership toward reciprocal protection.
The Wounded Companion

The Wounded Companion
Loyalty at a cost
Manchee attacks Matthew Lyle while Todd is threatened in the barn. Matthew’s machete injures the dog, but Manchee’s intervention gives Todd a chance to fight back.
Care returned
Todd carries the wounded Manchee out of danger, while Viola uses her medical supplies to treat him. Their roles reverse: the boy now protects the companion who has repeatedly protected him.
The Final Sacrifice

The Final Sacrifice
A last act of loyalty
Manchee leaps at Aaron to free Todd as the boat drifts into the current. Aaron catches him, forcing Todd to choose between returning for the dog and protecting Viola.
Grief carried onward
Todd cannot save Manchee, and the loss remains present in his Noise after he wakes in Carbonel Downs. The dog’s death ends their journey together but not his lasting influence on Todd.
